When I was young, I often heard people and ads promoting a more caring society. But what does it really mean to be caring? Solidarity is an attitude of empathy towards others, seeking the common good in a selfless way.
That definition was the one I liked best. However, I don’t believe in absolute selflessness. In some of history’s most important texts, we find ideas like:
- “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (in the Catholic Bible),
- “Do good to your parents, relatives, orphans, those in need, the close neighbor, and the distant neighbor” (in the Quran, the sacred book of Muslims),
- “Those who love life should treat all beings as themselves” (in the Lotus Sutra, a sacred Buddhist text),
- “Let everyone rise; let no one be left behind; let there not be one group, nor two groups among us. We are one.” (in the Popol Vuh, the sacred book of the Maya).
All of these statements highlight the idea that acting for the common good is also in our own interest.
I believe that in our times, this idea has largely faded. Although we are hyper-connected, we are also increasingly isolated, with fewer real and caring connections that nourish our souls.
Tourism is a great way to address this issue. How can I act in a caring and supportive way if I know nothing about others? I conclude, then, that it benefits others—and thus myself—to travel and discover the world.

Travel to Connect: How Tourism Promotes Empathy and the Common Good
In an increasingly globalized world, tourism has become an entryway to different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. However, beyond just discovering new landscapes and flavors, tourism has the potential to foster something much deeper: an attitude of empathy that promotes the common good.
Travel as a Tool for Empathy
Traveling puts us in direct contact with people from diverse backgrounds and contexts, allowing us to better understand their realities, challenges, and joys. When we walk through local markets, chat with artisans, or join in traditional celebrations, we stop being mere observers and become active participants in a shared experience. In these moments, empathy—the ability to put oneself in another’s place—flourishes.
This encounter with diversity pushes us to see the world from different perspectives, question our own biases, and appreciate diversity as an invaluable cultural treasure. It makes us aware that, despite differences, we all share the same humanity, and this understanding encourages a more caring and respectful attitude.
Responsible Tourism: Traveling with Purpose
Responsible and supportive tourism goes beyond simply traveling; it is a conscious way of interacting with the world. We recognize that our travels can have a positive impact on the people and places we visit. We become a light that both illuminates and is strengthened by our experiences.
This way of traveling promotes the common good, generates a positive perception of tourists, brings income to host communities, and helps preserve cultural heritage. In this way, we contribute to a tourism model that benefits both visitors and destinations.
The Magic of Small Actions
Empathy also manifests in everyday gestures that may seem small but have a great impact. Smiling, learning a few words in the local language, respecting local customs, or complimenting artisanal products are acts of solidarity that foster genuine connections. These simple gestures build a bridge of understanding and respect, reminding us that we are all part of a global, interdependent community.
Fostering a Global Attitude of Solidarity
When we travel with empathy, we become ambassadors of a more tolerant and open world. Every experience, every story heard, and every smile shared helps to break down cultural barriers and create an environment of greater understanding and solidarity. In this sense, tourism becomes a powerful tool for fostering peace and cooperation on a global scale.
Conclusion: Travel to Transform
Traveling can be more than a pastime or a form of escape. It is an opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the common good. By choosing responsible tourism, we not only enrich our lives but also contribute to a fairer, more empathetic, and caring world. Thus, every trip becomes an act of love and respect for others, planting a seed for a better future.
